F/X series

Continuing with the movies for this weekend ( I think I am gonna continue this and try and get more movies, it sure is fun).

This time, I chose a series (if 2 is a series). Its the F/X (short for Special Effects) movies. First one is F/X 1 Murder by Illusion. Totally not what I expected. I like crime, adventure, action, thriller and stuff like that more than I like romance in fact. So it was right up my sleeve. What I was surprised was by the plot which goes to places unexpected till the very end. There is hardly any suspense in this movie, actually to be honest none in fact. But it sure has enough thrills till the end. And with all those special effects, it wasn’t that creepy either. I don’t like too creepy movies. Sort of like going through the Haunted House in the amusement parks that they have knowing that those that come at you are fake and all you have to do is not jump at any sudden moves (which I do occasionally, but that is because of the surprise element rather than the effect of those creeps). I am not going into the story here but just a quick glimpse. Two people from the Justice Department involved in Witness Protection Program take the help of a Special Effect professional, Rollie Tyler, to stage a live assassination of a mafia leader so that he can testify against his other fellow people. And this guy takes up the job, but ends up being chased as the one who got the mafia leader killed , apart from having his girlfriend killed by the same people who are chasing him to gun him down too. How he turns their well knit storyboard to protect himself is what the story is about. And in between you have Mr McCarthy, a homicide detective brought in to investigate the killing of his girlfriend and the killer (who he ends up killing) coming in too into the story line and how they cross paths. It does keep one interested till the very end, when the actual reason for protecting the mafia leader comes in. That is when it becomes a cliche. And why do they have to kill the near and dear ones always. I have seen that telephone scene in lot of movies (English, Hindi, Tamil). Wonder if it was picked up from here or it is a standard scene in most thrillers.

The second one from the same series , F/X 2 Deadly Art of Illusion. In this they return after a period of time and Rollie’s effects are again needed by the Cops to find a serial killer, except that it backfires and his girlfriend’s ex (a cop) gets killed and Rollie is being chased again because he caught some of the live action that resulted in the cop’s death on camera. So he calls McCarthy to help him out and they go hunting. This time again its the corrupt officials but includes some Italian background and an attempt on his girlfriend and her son. Thankfully they don’t die but McCarthy’s love interest , the other cop who helps him in both the movies, gets shot. God I wish they would stop doing that, but no, that little tradition goes on even now. There are lot of special effects in this too, thanks to Tyler. How did he get into the Mob’s place to lure them away? He seems to just get in anywhere. And the clown 😦 I don’t like the clown. But the technology was nice, especially for that time period. They again end up with enough moola to set them up for life time or may be replace their never ending list of special effect items. Its always about the money though isn’t. I thought the first movie was much better than the second one. But it made my Sunday afternoon go real fast.

Real Steel – Repeat Performance

I have already watched Real Steel some time early last year I think. And again I got to watch it tonight. And I found that I enjoyed it watching it again too. That is nice because I am not a fan of this genre of movies. I don’t know if Transformers belong to this category, but I assume it does, and I just hate that series. I had a very bad headache after watching the first one in a theater when it got released and ended up bickering about it for a whole day. But I do like ‘I, Robot’, ‘Iron Man’ (part 1 only, the other one’s – not that great) and a few similar ones, again assuming that they belong to the same cadre.

The attraction in this movie is the kid. I just loved him in this movie. I was actually torn in between the feeling that should a kid be involved this kind of a violent game or should it be OK because they are only bots. If I leave that thought, then this movie was a pretty cool one. Especially the way the kid makes the bots dance. Very neat 🙂 I am not a fan of these kind of games (or rather any game other than Cricket , that too it should be a T20 format and my favorite team should be playing). Using these kind of bots to imitate a human was very different and nice and you get a good vs bad story drawing parallels to human life too.

And well who doesn’t like Hugh Jackman doing the boxing stuff and all huh!  The fights were pretty cool and Atom was wicked! I liked the visual effects a lot. It was done very very well.

Sunday Matinee shows

I got some movies from my friend to watch over this weekend and managed to watch four of them as of now. The earlier one was ‘Enough Said’ and the rest were reserved for today (Sunday Matinee Show 😉 ). Its been long since I did a movie marathon of sorts and it actually felt good. I am not going into the story line of any of them here.

a) Charade (1963 movie)

Until almost 20 minutes into the movie, I didn’t realize that I had seen it already but still went ahead and watched it fully because I kind of like this and who can resist Audrey Hepburn huh? It is a kind of romantic thriller but its a comedy too 🙂 Dialogues are so different from what we usually see now aren’t they ? Sometimes too direct and crisp. Of course, I have this little problem where Audrey’s character is sort of going on a sea-saw over Cary Grant, all hot and cold, believing and unbelieving, but that is sort of her charm in this. She is confused and doesn’t know whom to trust and goes with her instinct at times. A fun watch, even though it has supposedly a sort of serious story line.

b) Secondhand Lions (2003 movie)

Not something I would have generally picked, but since it was recommended to me, I started watching it and I kind of liked the innocence and craziness that came along with the story. This is the story of the boy who comes to live with his two sort of eccentric uncles and grows on them as does them on him. He also begins to go along with their crazy intentions to actually live their life rather than survive it in their age. So much so that he is ready to have the second hand lion, that they got for them to hunt and use it’s head in the fire place, as his pet, which in its final stage saves his life too. And all the stories of Africa and Sheiks and princesses which he hears, he isn’t sure if he should believe in them. But when Uncle Hub gives him half of his man-speech, he knows he wants to and sticks with it.

A very cute movie.

c) Lucky Number Slevin (2006 movie)

A movie which took me by surprise because in the beginning it was all some unrelated events coming together where this wrong guy is being summoned by not one by two rival gangster bosses and they both want him to do something for them and he isn’t even the person they are looking for. Until at the end when all the pieces form together and reveal the actual story. Even if I wanted to I am not going to reveal the story here. It is very well made (if you haven’t seen the movie, don’t read the Wikipedia, just go ahead with the movie). A very good crime and thriller drama for a perfect Sunday matinee.

I have some more, but I guess I will stick with these for now and have the rest for next weekend 🙂

Justice and Punishment

I guess I will be watching more of short movies this week, in between my hectic work to relax myself, since I don’t have time for 2+ hour long movies. So here is one another for today.

What is the difference between Justice and Punishment ? Check out the ‘The Punisher: #Dirty Laundry‘ short film. But one word of warning: Has brutal violence scenes in it with blood splattering everywhere and all.

I am not much into games or comic heroes so I didn’t know about the Punisher series before I saw this short film. But if they have such short films on it, I would love to watch it. It always gives me peace to see that the guilty is punished and justice is served. But yeah, you must like that kind of heroic characters for that. And I like them just fine.

One question though: Is Jack Daniels whiskey bottle that strong ?

In flight entertainment

Another thing that I love during my flights (other than the obvious ‘flying’ experience) is the In Flight Entertainment. I love how we get to watch all those new movies (obviously the cost of it might have been included in the ticket price). So during my onward journey to Madrid with a one hour break in Dubai, it was almost a 10-12 hrs journey. And yet I continued to watch quite some movies , in spite of me being tired (had to get up too early) and had vowed (to myself) that I will take that nap in the plane. So here they are

a) Frozen:

One movie that I wanted to watch for sometime now. I love Disney movies or rather animations, especially if it involves magic, fairies, princes, princesses …blah blah blah..you get it 😉 The good part of this is that its about two sisters. More than a romance (which is there in small parts) its about how two sisters find their way back to each other. I am not going into the story because most of them would have seen this movie by now. Even though it had that usual cliched villain it was still good to watch them sing all through the movie. Especially the ‘Let it go’ . If you are an elder sister and you are pushed with responsibilities then it might make a little more personal contact to you, that song 🙂 It sort of felt a little long but it was fun to watch too. So yeah, am glad that I got to watch that movie during my first leg of the journey.

b) Rush:

One movie which was suggested to me but I missed it last year was Rush. Thank God, they had it in the in-flight list. I was so glad to start with it once my animation craving had been satisfied. Now I get to feel the adrenaline rush of car racing. I am not a very avid fan of racing and I don’t follow it also but I love driving or rather fast driving (not rash). I always have this rush in me when I am in a car (irrespective of who is driving) and suddenly all these scenes outside the window goes vroom vroom vroom. OK, I am digressing here. But this movie is not only about that, its about two people involved in it. Surprisingly there is no protagonist and an antagonist. Its the biography of two formula one drivers who are neither enemies nor friends. Its such a different and strange relationship they have. They seem to gain motivation from each other and give it in return too, along with respect for each other. It was a such a different story that I started recommending it to my other friends to definitely watch it. Its so worth it. Now I understand the surprise of other people who suggested this movie about why it did not get nominated for Oscars ? That is too sad. It was such a good movie in all aspects. The actors were too good, the screenplay was neat. Its sad that some good movies get missed like this. But definitely a very worthy watch.

c) Austenland

Since I was done with my adventure, I switched to Romance and I chose Austenland. How many movies have been actually made on Mr Darcy and Austen by the way ? I keep stumbling upon them one too many times. Some day it is going to put me off Darcy I think. I like  Mr Darcy (the character actually) myself, but not to the extent of being crazy or anything. But here is this girl who sort of lives in a fantasy land thinking of all things Jane Austen. So her sister is hell bent on making her take the trip to Austenland , a land where you get to feel the era of Austen and her characters. But sometimes somethings are better left in dream and fantasy. They may not have the same appeal in real life. That is what happens in this movie too. She sort of hovers between real and reel and suddenly when the lines start blurring and is confused as to whom she is actually attracted to and why and if they were doing their role or if they were really into her, she runs back to real life and to her sanity, only to find that some things from the reel life followed her to make it real for her. Yeah yeah, it happens only in novels (from where the movie was adapted) and in movies and although it was very cliched and worn out line, it did make for a HEA (happy ever after) ending 😉 Not a great movie per se, but if you want to relax a while it will do.

During my return journey, I had a book to finish so I forgot all about the movies and concentrated on my book and missed out on some which I could have seen. But just like my blog name, for me books always come before the movies 😀
